Page is slow to respond to clicks and taps

What this means for your business

Your page looks loaded but freezes before responding to clicks or taps. Visitors think something is broken and often leave. This is especially noticeable on mobile phones with slower processors.

  1. 1High TBT means too many scripts are running at once during page load, making the page feel frozen. The main culprits are almost always third-party tools.
  2. 2Start by temporarily disabling third-party scripts one at a time (chat widgets, social share buttons, review platforms, ad trackers) and run PageSpeed Insights after each removal to see what's causing the problem.
  3. 3Ask your developer to delay non-critical JavaScript so it only loads after the user interacts with the page (scrolls or clicks) rather than on initial load.
  4. 4Replace heavy third-party scripts with lighter alternatives — for example, a simple analytics snippet instead of the full Google Tag Manager setup.
  5. 5Make sure you're not loading scripts you no longer actively use. Audit every plugin and app installed on your site and remove anything inactive.

On WordPress

Perfmatters plugin can delay JavaScript until user interaction (scroll or click). This alone can dramatically reduce TBT. WP Rocket's "Delay JS Execution" feature does the same.

On Shopify

Install the free Shopify Theme Inspector Chrome extension (search "Shopify Theme Inspector" in the Chrome Web Store) — it shows a flame graph of exactly which scripts run on each page and how long each takes, so you know what to target before making changes.

Pro tip: Third-party scripts (chat widgets, review platforms, social sharing buttons) are the #1 cause of high TBT. Try temporarily removing all third-party scripts and measure the difference — you'll immediately see which one is the culprit.
